Tire age is determined by the DOT code printed on the sidewall of every tire. The last four digits of this code reveal the exact manufacture date: the first two digits are the week and the last two are the year. For example, a DOT code ending in 2319 means the tire was built in the 23rd week of 2019.

Tires degrade over time even if they are never driven. Heat, oxygen, and ultraviolet light slowly break down the rubber compounds, causing cracks, hardening, and loss of grip. This aging process, often called dry rot, means a 10-year-old tire can be unsafe regardless of how much tread it has left.

That is why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends replacing all tires 6 to 10 years after their manufacture date — even when the tread still looks good. Some tire manufacturers advise replacement after just 6 years, so check both your tread depth and your tire's age.
