Find out exactly how old your car is based on its manufacture date, model year, or VIN year code.
Understanding your car's age and VIN year codes
If you know the exact month and year your car was manufactured (often found on the driver's side door jamb sticker, under the hood, or in the owner's manual), enter it directly. The calculator computes the precise age in years, months, and days from that date to today.
Vehicle model years often begin in the fall of the previous calendar year. A 2025 model year car might have been built as early as summer 2024. The calculator estimates the age assuming manufacture began in September of the preceding year for a rough but reasonable estimate.
The 10th character of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) encodes the model year. Use this table to decode yours:
| Code | Year | Code | Year | Code | Year | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1980 | L | 1990 | 1 | 2001 | ||
| B | 1981 | M | 1991 | 2 | 2002 | ||
| C | 1982 | N | 1992 | 3 | 2003 | ||
| D | 1983 | P | 1993 | 4 | 2004 | ||
| E | 1984 | R | 1994 | 5 | 2005 | ||
| F | 1985 | S | 1995 | 6 | 2006 | ||
| G | 1986 | T | 1996 | 7 | 2007 | ||
| H | 1987 | V | 1997 | 8 | 2008 | ||
| J | 1988 | W | 1998 | 9 | 2009 | ||
| K | 1989 | X | 1999 | A | 2010 | ||
| Y | 2000 | B | 2011 |
For 2010 onward, the cycle repeats: A=2010, B=2011, etc.

Knowing your car's exact age helps you anticipate maintenance needs. Older vehicles require more frequent oil changes, timing belt replacements, and fluid checks. Stay ahead of costly repairs by understanding where your car sits on the age spectrum.
Vehicle age directly affects resale value, insurance premiums, and registration fees. A car crosses depreciation milestones at specific ages. Use this data to make informed decisions about buying, selling, or insuring a vehicle.
Many insurance companies and car clubs offer special rates and benefits for vehicles that reach classic (30+ years) or antique (45+ years) status. Find out if your car qualifies for collector car insurance or vintage vehicle registration.
