π°π· Your Ages in Different Systems
π Understanding Korean Age Systems
π International Age (λ§ λμ΄ - Man Nai)
This is the standard age system used worldwide. You are 0 years old at birth and gain one year on each birthday. As of June 2023, this is now the official system in South Korea.
π°π· Traditional Korean Age (μΈλ λμ΄ - Seneun Nai)
In the traditional system, everyone is 1 year old at birth (counting the time in the womb) and gains a year every January 1st, not on their birthday. This can make you 1-2 years "older" than your international age.
π Counting Age (Year-Based)
This system counts how many calendar years you've lived through. You're 1 in your birth year and add a year each January 1st. This is commonly used for school enrollment and some legal purposes.
π 2023 Law Change
In June 2023, South Korea officially switched to the international age system for all legal and administrative purposes. Traditional Korean age remains culturally significant but is no longer used in official documents.
π Cultural Context
The Korean age system emphasizes collectivism - everyone born in the same year is considered the same age. This creates strong peer bonds and social hierarchies based on birth year rather than exact birthdate.
π¬ When to Use Which
Use international age for: legal documents, medical records, official forms. Traditional age may still appear in: casual conversation, K-dramas, traditional ceremonies, and with older generations.
