🥃 How It Works

Whisky aging is a complex process where the spirit interacts with the cask. Each year in cask, the whisky evaporates (angel's share), extracts compounds from the wood, and develops flavor. Different cask types impart different characteristics.

The age of a whisky is calculated from the date of distillation to the date of bottling. In Scotland, whisky must be aged for at least 3 years in oak casks to be legally called Scotch whisky. The age statement on a bottle refers to the youngest whisky in that blend.

🧐 Why It Matters

  • 🥃 Flavor Development — Understand how age transforms spirit from raw new make to complex, layered whisky
  • 💰 Value Assessment — Older isn't always better, but it significantly affects price and rarity
  • 🛢 Cask Impact — Different casks (sherry, bourbon, port, wine) create dramatically different flavor profiles
  • 📜 Age Statements — A "12 year old" whisky means the youngest drop in the bottle was aged for 12 years
