๐ How It Works
The American Red Cross and most certifying bodies set a minimum age of 15 for lifeguard certification. This means you can begin training and take the certification course the year you turn 15, though you must be 15 by the final day of the course to receive your certificate. Waterfront and beach settings often require a higher minimum age of 16 due to the added challenges of open water, waves, currents, and longer rescue distances.
Some organizations set their own thresholds: the YMCA and a number of private facilities require lifeguards to be at least 16. Beyond the age requirement, becoming a lifeguard involves passing a swim test, completing CPR/AED and First Aid training, and passing a written exam that covers rescue techniques and emergency action plans. Enter your birth date and the setting you're interested in to see whether you meet the age requirement today.
If you don't meet the minimum age yet, don't worry - many facilities offer junior lifeguard and swim team programs that build the skills you'll need. Use this calculator to find out exactly how many years you have to wait until you're old enough to start your lifeguarding career.
| Setting | Typical Minimum Age |
|---|---|
| Pool Lifeguard | 15 |
| Waterfront Lifeguard | 15 |
| Beach Lifeguard | 16 |
| YMCA Pool | 16 |
๐ก Why It Matters
Knowing the minimum age for lifeguarding helps you plan your training timeline. Here's why it's worth checking:
๐ผ A Great First Job
Lifeguarding teaches responsibility, teamwork, and leadership - and it pays well for teens. It's one of the most respected first jobs you can get, with opportunities to advance to head lifeguard or aquatic supervisor roles.
๐ Lifesaving Skills
CPR, AED, and water rescue training are valuable for life, whether you stay in aquatics or move on to other careers. These are skills you can use anywhere, anytime - and they look great on college and job applications.
๐ Certification Expires
Lifeguard certifications are valid for 2 years, so recertification keeps your skills sharp and up to date. Staying current means you're always ready to respond confidently in an emergency, and many employers require proof of an active certification.
