📖 How It Works

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a pure lunar calendar made up of 12 months of about 29 or 30 days each, adding up to roughly 354 days per year — about 11 days shorter than the 365-day Gregorian (solar) year. Because Islamic years are shorter, your age in Hijri years runs slightly ahead of your age in Gregorian years: a person who has lived 30 Gregorian years has completed about 31 Islamic years.

This calculator uses the standard tabular (arithmetic) Islamic calendar, which assigns leap days by a fixed 30-year cycle rather than by observing the moon. Its dates can differ by one day from official moon-sighting calendars such as the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. The age in whole Hijri years, however, is essentially unaffected by this one-day difference.

Approximate — a Gregorian year spans parts of two Hijri years.

ðŸ’Ą Why It Matters

🌙 Lunar vs Solar Years

The Hijri calendar is lunar — 12 months of about 354 days — while the Gregorian calendar is solar at about 365 days. The roughly 11-day gap each year means your Islamic age counts up faster than your Gregorian age, so the two ages rarely match.

🕋 Islamic Life Events

Birthdays in Ramadan, the timing of Hajj, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, and milestones like a child's aqeeqah are all dated in the Hijri calendar. Knowing your Hijri age helps you understand these observances in the way they are traditionally celebrated.

🌍 Global Muslim Community

Muslims worldwide use the Hijri calendar for religious observances, fasting, festivals and legal documents in many countries. Converting your Gregorian birth date to the Hijri calendar connects you to that shared global reckoning of time.
