This calculator counts how many Olympic Games â both Summer and Winter â have taken place during your lifetime. Simply enter your birth date, and the tool compares your birth year against the complete history of Olympic Games to calculate your personal Olympic count.
Modern Olympic Games are divided into two separate events. The Summer Olympics have been held every four years since 1896 (with gaps during World War I and World War II). The Winter Olympics began in 1924 and were held in the same years as the Summer Games until 1992, when the schedule shifted to a staggered two-year cycle â Winter Games now take place in even-numbered years between Summer Games.
The calculator counts an Olympic year if the Games occurred in or after your birth year and before or including the current year of 2026. For example, if you were born in 1990, you would have lived through the Summer Olympics of 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 â plus the Winter Olympics of 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.

The Olympic Games were canceled in 1916 due to World War I, and in 1940 and 1944 due to World War II. The 1916 Berlin Games were scheduled but never held. The 1940 Games were originally awarded to Tokyo, then moved to Helsinki, before being canceled entirely. The 1944 London Games were also canceled. These are the only three occasions in modern Olympic history where the Games were not held as scheduled.
The Winter Olympics began in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Originally called "International Winter Sports Week," the event was retroactively designated as the first Winter Olympic Games. Before 1924, some winter sports like figure skating and ice hockey were included in the Summer Olympics. The Winter Games were held in the same year as the Summer Games from 1924 through 1992.
The International Olympic Committee decided in 1986 to stagger the Summer and Winter Games to alternate every two years, improving media coverage and reducing the financial burden on host cities. The last simultaneous year was 1992 (Albertville Winter Games and Barcelona Summer Games). The next Winter Games were held just two years later in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway, creating the new alternating schedule we have today.
As of 2026, there have been 32 Summer Olympic Games (held in 30 different editions, counting the 2020 Tokyo Games that took place in 2021) and 24 Winter Olympic Games, for a total of 56 Olympic Games since the modern Olympics began in 1896. The next Summer Games will be in Los Angeles 2028, and the next Winter Games in 2030. This count excludes the three canceled Games of 1916, 1940, and 1944.
The United States has hosted the most Olympic Games, with a total of eight â four Summer Games (St. Louis 1904, Los Angeles 1932 and 1984, Atlanta 1996) and four Winter Games (Lake Placid 1932 and 1980, Squaw Valley 1960, Salt Lake City 2002). The United Kingdom has hosted three Summer Games (London 1908, 1948, 2012). France has also hosted multiple Games, including the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
