This calculator counts the number of full moons that have occurred since your birth date using the synodic month — the exact time it takes the Moon to complete a full cycle of phases as seen from Earth. While the Moon orbits Earth every 27.3 days (the sidereal period), the synodic month is longer at 29.53 days because Earth is also moving around the Sun, so the Moon must travel a bit farther along its orbit to catch up to the same alignment with the Sun and Earth.
To calculate your total full moons, we take the number of days you've been alive (accounting for leap years) and divide by 29.53. We also estimate the number of supermoons (full moons at perigee — roughly 3–4 per year), blue moons (the second full moon in a calendar month, occurring about once every 2.7 years), and lunar eclipses (when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, occurring about twice per year on average).

Since the lunar cycle (synodic month) is 29.53 days long, and most calendar months are 30 or 31 days, it's statistically inevitable that occasionally a month will contain two full moons. This happens because the calendar month is slightly longer than the moon's phase cycle. Over a typical year, there are 12.37 full moons, so about every 2.5 to 3 years, one month gets a second full moon — which we call a "blue moon." February is the only month short enough (28 or 29 days) that it can never contain two full moons.
