Take a birth date of March 14, 1987.
- Month: 3 stays 3.
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5.
- Year: 1987 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7.
- Total: 3 + 5 + 7 = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6.
The result is life path 6. Notice that the year is reduced before being added to the month and day. Adding all eight digits at once gives the same answer here (1+9+8+7+3+1+4 = 33 → 6), and in fact digit reduction is order-independent because addition is associative. The only place order matters is when a master number appears.
Master Numbers 11 and 22
If any stage produces 11, 22, or 33, most schools stop reducing and keep it as a “master number.” The rule causes disagreements because practitioners differ on which stages are exempt.
