Today, a newborn in a high-income country has about a 1-in-3 chance of overlapping with a great-grandparent, and roughly half of all newborns will still have a grandmother alive when they start school. The reason is not that people live dramatically longer than they used to — it is that the arithmetic of overlapping lifespans has shifted.

That shift is easiest to see by counting, not by theorizing. You can work out the exact span for any two family members with the precision age tool on our homepage by entering both birth dates side by side.

What “Four Generations” Actually Measures

Four living generations in one family means four birth dates, spaced by the gap between each generation having its first surviving child. That gap — not lifespan — is the number that controls whether the overlap happens.

Generation gap

Four generations span

Oldest must reach

How common

20 years

60 years at the 4th birth

~60 years

Common

25 years

75 years

~75 years

Common

30 years

90 years

~90 years

Uncommon

35 years

105 years

~105 years

Rare

The bottom row is the key: if every generation waits until 35 to have a first child, the great-grandparent has to reach 105 for all four to be alive at once. Since only about 1 person in 100,000 reaches 105, wide generation gaps make four-generation families almost impossible. That is why four living generations cluster in families with early births.

Worked Example

Take a family with these birth dates:

Great-grandmother: 1944

Grandmother: 1968 (gap 24)

Mother: 1993 (gap 25)

Baby: 2024 (gap 31)

The total span from 1944 to 2024 is 80 years. For the great-grandmother to meet the baby, she needs to reach 80 — a milestone that about 60% of women in high-income countries now pass. Had each gap been the 35-year case above, the span would be 105 years and the overlap would be a near-impossibility.

Why the Overlap Grew Over the Last Century

Two things changed at once. Adult life expectancy rose — a person born in 1900 in the United States lived to about 49 on average, while a person born in 2000 is projected to reach roughly 79. At the same time, average age at first birth rose from about 22 to nearly 27. Those two trends pull in opposite directions, and the reason four generations became more common anyway is that the survival gain was larger than the delay cost.

1900 baseline: short adult lives meant a single grandparent overlap was already rare.

Mid-century: falling infant mortality plus stable early childbearing created the classic three-generation norm.

Today: living past 80 is routine, so a 60–75 year total span is well within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does four generations require everyone to be alive on the same day? Yes. It is a snapshot, not a chain. The great-grandparent and the newborn must both be alive on the same date, even if only for a short period.

Is a five-generation family possible? It happens but rarely, because the spans grow to 100+ years unless several generations have children very young. Five-generation families are most common in regions with early marriage and low average age at first birth.

How do I compute the exact span? Enter the oldest and youngest birth dates into the birth date calculator; the difference in completed years is the span the oldest person must reach for the overlap to exist.

Four living generations in one family depend on generation gaps, not just lifespan.
