A February 29 birthday creates a paperwork problem that most people never think about until it lands on them: what do you write as your “real” birthday in the three years that have no February 29? The answer is not a single rule — it depends on what you are calculating, and the difference can flip a legal milestone by a day.

Why Leap Day Exists at All

Earth’s orbit takes about 365.2422 days. The extra 0.2422 days adds up to roughly one full day every four years, so a leap day is inserted to keep the calendar aligned with the seasons. The rule is not simply “every four years”: a year divisible by 100 is skipped unless it is also divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.

Year
Leap year?
Reason

2000
Yes
Divisible by 400

1900
No
Divisible by 100, not 400

2024
Yes
Divisible by 4

2100
No
Divisible by 100, not 400

The Legal Age Question: March 1 or February 28?

In most U.S. states and under common-law tradition, a person born on February 29 legally turns a year older on March 1 in non-leap years. Some states specify February 28 instead. This matters for driver’s licenses, voting eligibility, and age-restricted purchases.

The practical effect is tiny — the person reaches the milestone at most one day later than a naïve February 28 assumption — but it is the kind of thing that gets noticed when someone tries to vote or buy a car on February 28 of a non-leap year.

Worked Example: Turning 18 on a Leap Day

Say someone was born February 29, 2008. In 2026 there is no February 29.
