In some households the name day matters more. If you have ever received a text on March 19 from a Polish friend named Joseph saying “happy name day,” you have met the tradition without a name for it. This guide explains how name days are assigned, how the calendar works, and how to calculate one without guessing.

What a Name Day Actually Is

A name day (Greek: onomastiki giorti, Polish: imieniny, Hungarian: névnap) is the feast day of the saint a person is named after. The logic runs on two rules that most explanations skip:

Church-calendar rule: The day is fixed by the liturgical calendar, not by the birthday. A child born in July named Nicholas still celebrates on December 6.

Local-rule override: If several saints share a name, the local church picks one. Nicholas of Myra (Dec 6) and Nicholas of Japan (Feb 3) both exist, so a Greek family and a Russian family may celebrate the same name weeks apart.

That second rule is why two people with identical names can have different name days and both be correct.

How the Calendar Is Fixed, Not Calculated

Unlike an age, which is arithmetic, a name day is a lookup. There is no formula that converts a birth date into a name day. The only inputs are the name and the church tradition.

Country

Term

Calendar basis

Typical celebration

Greece

onomastiki giorti

Orthodox synaxarion

Calls, open house, sweets

Poland

imieniny

Catholic calendar

Flowers, small gifts

Hungary

névnap

Catholic + civil list

Printed calendars, cards

Czechia

svátek

Civil name-day list

Listed on every calendar

Note the Czech case: the state maintains a civil name-day list, so even non-religious households have a name day printed on the wall calendar. That is administratively assigned, not canonically assigned.

The Practical Problem: Finding Your Own Name Day

Here is the friction that sends people searching. Say your name is Sophia. The Orthodox church commemorates Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) on September 17, and also Saint Sophia of Rome on May 15 in the Western calendar. Which is yours? The answer depends on the tradition you were baptized into, not on the date you were born. Three checks resolve it:

Ask the baptismal parish, not a general calendar. Parish records name the patron saint explicitly.

Check the rite: Orthodox, Greek Catholic, Roman Catholic, and Protestant calendars diverge. The same name maps to different dates.

Fall back to the civil list if you are secular — Czech, Hungarian, Polish, and Swedish civil lists assign one date per name regardless of saint.

Why the Date Can Move

Two mechanical facts shift name days on the ground:

Julian vs Gregorian offset: Orthodox churches using the Julian calendar (Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia) run their fixed feasts 13 days behind Gregorian ones until 2100. December 6 on the Julian reckoning lands on December 19 on a Western wall calendar.

Paschal feasts move: Names tied to movable feasts (Easter, Ascension) shift every year, because those dates depend on the lunar cycle.

This is the same 13-day arithmetic that makes people ask how old they are right now in a calendar system they did not grow up with. Age and name days share a root cause: two calendars, one life.

A Worked Example

Suppose you are baptized Greek Orthodox with the name Dimitrios.

Patron: Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, feast October 26 (Gregorian reckoning by the Church of Greece).

Name day: October 26. Fixed, every year.

If your parish follows the Julian calendar instead, it falls on November 8.

Your birthday remains whatever date you were born. Nothing about the two is linked.

FAQ

Do I need to be religious to have a name day? No. Civil lists in Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Sweden assign one to every name regardless of practice.

Is a name day the same as a birthday? No. It is tied to a saint’s feast, not a birth date, and it stays fixed for life.

Can I choose a different name day? In practice yes — many people adopt the date of whichever saint sharing their name their family historically honoured.

Why do two friends with the same name celebrate on different days? Different church traditions or different patron saints. Both are correct within their own tradition.

For the calendar arithmetic behind dates, ages, and the shifting offsets between counting systems, the free tools at YourAgeCalculator handle the calculation so you do not have to track leap years by hand.

In Greece, Poland, Hungary, and much of the Orthodox world, a person’s calendar has two red-letter days: the actual birthday and the name day.
