Since June 2023, South Korea has legally used international age for official documents \u2014 the system where you start at zero and gain a year on your birthday. Yet walk into a Korean family gathering in 2026 and you may still be asked for your “Korean age,” which can be one or even two years higher. The gap did not disappear when the law changed; it moved from paperwork into social habit.<\/p>\n

The Three Systems Side by Side<\/h2>\n

Korea historically ran three age conventions at once, and confusing them is the single most common source of error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Korean age starts at 1 because the time in the womb counts as a year, and everybody adds a year together on January 1 rather than on their own birthday. That is why a baby born on December 30 turns 2 years old after just two days of life under the old convention.<\/p>\n
