Reduce any birth date to a single digit and you land on a number between 1 and 9 \u2014 or one of two master numbers, 11 and 22. That digit is what numerologists call the life path number. Whatever you think of the interpretation, the arithmetic itself is straightforward and checkable, and it is the same digit-reduction technique used in checksum algorithms, casting out nines, and ISBN validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Three-Step Reduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Take a birth date of March 14, 1987<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Month: 3 stays 3.<\/li>
  2. Day: 14 \u2192 1 + 4 = 5.<\/li>
  3. Year: 1987 \u2192 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 \u2192 2 + 5 = 7.<\/li>
  4. Total: 3 + 5 + 7 = 15 \u2192 1 + 5 = 6<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The result is life path 6. Notice that the year is reduced before<\/em> being added to the month and day. Adding all eight digits at once gives the same answer here (1+9+8+7+3+1+4 = 33 \u2192 6), and in fact digit reduction is order-independent because addition is associative. The only place order matters is when a master number appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Master Numbers 11 and 22<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If any stage produces 11, 22, or 33, most schools stop reducing and keep it as a “master number.” The rule causes disagreements because practitioners differ on which stages are exempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Strict digit reduction distributes the nine outcomes almost perfectly evenly across the Gregorian calendar \u2014 each lands near 11.1%, with the small deviation coming from the uneven way month lengths and the leap cycle interact with the digit sum. Master numbers take their share out of 11 and 22 rather than adding new slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
