Your voice is one of the few physical traits that broadcasts your age before you say a word about it. Recordings made in your twenties and again in your fifties rarely sound the same, and the difference is measurable. Vocal folds lose collagen and elastin at roughly the same rate as skin, dropping about 1% of their elastic tissue per year after age 30. That slow change is why a stranger on a phone call can often guess your approximate age within a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adult men average a fundamental frequency around 120 Hz and women around 210 Hz. In men the drop happens noticeably earlier, largely because testosterone, which thickens the vocal folds, slowly declines from about age 30 \u2014 roughly 1% per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Worked Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Take a woman who first recorded her voice at 28 and is now 52 \u2014 24 years of change. Expect her speaking pitch to have fallen by around 3.5 semitones, meaning a sentence that once centered on a G3 now sits nearer an E3. Her maximum comfortable phonation time, if she was at 22 seconds at 28, is likely around 17 seconds at 52 with no other health factors. These are averages, not verdicts: smoking, acid reflux and professional voice use all accelerate the curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
