Measurement Traps That Produce False Loss

Before concluding anything about your own rate of loss, eliminate these four sources of error:

  • Time of day. Measure in the morning, consistently. Evening measurements can be 1-2 cm shorter after a day of gravity loading.
  • Footwear. A 1 cm heel is a 1 cm error. Height is defined as barefoot.
  • Head position. The Frankfurt plane (eye socket and ear canal level) is the clinical standard. Tilting the chin changes the reading by up to 1.5 cm.
